From Iconic Landmarks To Hidden Gems The Best of Abilene, Texas
Why Abilene Holds a Special Place in My Heart
I have always known that Abilene is more than just another city in Texas, it’s a sweet spot that stands out in the Lone Star State. This isn't just my opinion, George Hamilton-IV himself immortalized it in song. And yes, he was singing about our Abilene, Texas. Need proof? Just look at his album, where “West Texas Highway” follows right after; "Abilene, Abilene, Prettiest Town I've Ever Seen". I’ve included the video below for you to enjoy and relive that moment with me.
What Makes Abilene Special Beyond the Visitor's View
While searching for Hamilton’s video, I stumbled across a list titled "Top 10 Things to Do in Abilene" by the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB). It got me thinking: Do they see our city the same way we Abilenians do? Do they talk about those everyday comforts we sometimes overlook?
For me, Abilene isn’t just a place with attractions, it’s a faith-built community with over 170 churches and more than 30 different denominations. It’s where the sunsets leave you breathless, the steaks are unmatched, and the neighbors make you feel like you’re part of something bigger. To put it simply, Abilene is my version of Heaven on Earth.
A Nod to the ACVB's Efforts
I have to hand it to the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, they did a fantastic job showcasing our city. Their website features 21 different things to do, from cultural venues to outdoor adventures, proving there’s always something happening in Abilene. You can check out their full list of activities here.
Discovering Hidden Gems (Even for Locals)
I’ll admit it: some of the places listed are ones I have yet to experience myself. Isn’t that just the way it goes? We live surrounded by these amazing spots but somehow take them for granted. Well, no more. This has inspired me to explore more of what Abilene has to offer, and I hope it does the same for you.
