The Historic Paramount Theatre Is a Real Gem Found in Abilene
If you grew up in Abilene or went to school here, you've likely experienced the magic of the downtown Paramount Theatre at 352 Cypress in Abilene. As the lights dim, the stars emerge on the ceiling, creating a captivating atmosphere that enchants all who visit.
Commissioned in 1928 by Horace Wooten, the visionary behind the Abilene Towers Motel, the Paramount Theatre was designed by architect David Castle. Wooten's vision was for a "rich, nostalgic, and atmospheric movie theater," and Castle delivered just that. The Paramount opened its doors on May 19, 1930, and quickly became a marvel.

The Paramount has undergone restorations, notably in 1987, to preserve its original Pueblo Deco design. The theater's auditorium recreates a Spanish courtyard at night, complete with the clouds moving above and a sparkling starlit sky, offering a mystical experience to all who visit.
The theater's history is rich. On its opening night, the first movie shown was "Safety in Numbers," starring Buddy Rogers, Carole Lombard, Kathryn Crawford, and Josephine Dunn. During World War II and other military conflicts, the Paramount provided a haven-like atmosphere for the soldiers and airmen stationed at Camp Barkley and Dyess Air Base.
The Paramount Theater was restored by a group of dedicated Abilene citizens
As downtown Abilene lost popularity, the Paramount struggled and eventually closed in the mid-70s. However, the Abilene Preservation League (APL), a group of dedicated citizens, revived the theater and downtown Abilene. In 1987, a generous donor restored the Paramount, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring its preservation.
Today, the Paramount Theatre hosts a variety of events, including private parties, children's ballet recitals, classic films, concerts, stand-up comedy, and performances by the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Chorus Abilene, and the Abilene Community Band. If you haven't visited the Paramount Theatre, add it to your bucket list. It's a timeless piece of Abilene's heritage that continues to dazzle and delight.
