Burglary Rates in Texas Have Dropped

The good news? Burglaries in Texas dropped by 7% in 2024, according to Security Screen Masters Texas. While the 2025 numbers aren’t in yet, this decline is likely due to the growing number of doorbell cameras and smart home security systems many Texans are installing.

Personally, I believe those little doorbell cameras are one of the best investments a homeowner can make. They’re deterring would-be criminals before they even reach the porch.

Now, let’s break down how burglars are actually getting in, because the truth may surprise you.

1. Unlocked Doors and Windows Are the #1 Entry Point

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 80% of burglars never actually break in, they just walk in. Most enter through unlocked front doors or windows.

I constantly remind my wife and kids, “Before you pull out of the driveway, check the doors!” If you leave things unlocked, you’re practically rolling out the red carpet for thieves.

2. Backyard Access Is a Burglar’s Dream

Secluded backyards are another common target. If your property backs up to open land, a pond, a tank, or even a wooded area with no neighbors behind you, burglars see that as a prime opportunity.

They love privacy and isolation. If you have that kind of setup, consider motion-activated lights, cameras, or even a good ol’ watchdog. The goal is to make your home a harder target than your neighbor’s.

3. Open Garage Doors Are a Welcome Sign

You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve seen open garage doors around Abilene with no car in sight. That’s a loud and clear message to a burglar: “Nobody's home, and the goods are right here.”

Years ago, I learned the hard way. My wife and I made a quick grocery run, left the garage door open, and thought the inside door would be enough. When we came back, the freezer in the garage was wide open, and almost everything was gone.

Final Thought: Be Proactive, Be Watchful

Protecting your family and home doesn’t require a fortress, just smart, consistent habits.

  • Always double-check the locks on doors and windows.
  • If you have a secluded backyard, secure that area with cameras or barriers.
  • Never leave your garage door open unattended.

And be like me, the nosey neighbor who watches everything. I take pictures of unfamiliar vehicles and people roaming through our neighborhood, and it’s helped prevent suspicious activity.

Let’s work together, Texas, to keep our communities and families safe and sound this summer.
