The City of Abilene Parks and Recreation Division is offering Beginner Square Dancing lessons beginning Thursday, August 6, with classes continuing through November 5. Whether you've never stepped onto a dance floor or it's been years since your last "do-si-do, and do the cotton-eyed Joe," this course is designed for beginners.

I Remember Those Square Dancing Nights

It's been 20 or 30 years since I spent evenings at the old Big Country Square Dance Hall in Tye. I wasn't out on the dance floor myself. Instead, I was broadcasting live on the radio, inviting folks from all over the Big Country to come out and give square dancing a try.

Being born with one arm meant I couldn't exactly swing a dance partner around the way square dancing calls for, but I sure enjoyed watching everyone else. Couples of all ages, especially many retirees, would be laughing, spinning, and having the time of their lives.

Even from the sidelines, you could tell it was about much more than dancing. It was about fellowship, friendship, staying active, and simply enjoying an evening together. That's one of the reasons I'm glad to see beginner square dancing being offered again through the City of Abilene Parks and Recreation Division.

More Than Just Dancing

Square dancing is one of those activities that doesn't feel like exercise because you're having too much fun. You'll learn new steps each week, meet people from around the Big Country, and enjoy an evening that's filled with music, laughter, and plenty of movement.

If you're looking for a new hobby, a unique date night, or simply a reason to get out of the house and stay active, this could be exactly what you're looking for.

For registration and additional information, visit the Abilene Parks & Recreation Registration page.

Who knows? You may discover, just like I did all those years ago, that square dancing is a whole lot more fun than you ever imagined.
