Living in West Texas, you don’t need a weather app to tell you it’s hot. You feel it the second you open your car door. In just minutes, your vehicle can turn into an oven, and I learned that lesson the hard way.

At one point, my radio station truck became a rolling storage unit for plastic water bottles. A doctor friend of mine told me straight up: "Don’t drink those after they’ve been sitting in the heat." He said high temperatures can change the chemistry of the plastic and potentially contaminate the water.

That was all I needed to hear. Now those bottles are only good for emergencies like topping off the radiator.

But that got me thinking, there are a lot more things we should never leave in a hot Texas car.

Texas Safety Alert: People, Pets, and Everyday Items at Risk

Some of these may seem obvious, but every summer, we hear stories that prove they’re not.

Never leave these in your vehicle:

  • Kids or Pets - Not even for a minute. Temperatures can become deadly fast.
  • Plastic Water Bottles - Heat can cause chemical leaching.
  • Electronics & Batteries - Phones, laptops, and power banks can catch fire.
  • Medications - Heat can reduce effectiveness or spoil them completely.
  • Aerosol Cans & Flammables - These can explode under extreme heat.

And just as important, always check your back seat, because every year in Texas, preventable hot car deaths still happen, something the Texas Department of Transportation continues to warn about. According to the department, these incidents are preventable, and drivers are urged to make checking the back seat a habit every time.

Texas Heat Can Ruin More Than You Think

Here are a few more items many folks forget about:

    • Fresh Food (Meat, Eggs, Dairy, Pet Food) - Spoils quickly and can become dangerous.
    • Fruits and Vegetables - Heat breaks them down fast and attracts bacteria.
    • Plants - Even a short time in a hot car can kill them.
    • Lipstick & Chapstick - Melt into a mess (ask me how I know).

Why a Hot Car Is So Dangerous in Texas

When temperatures climb into the triple digits, the inside of your car can hit 140°F or higher in a very short time. That kind of heat doesn’t just make things uncomfortable, it creates real health and safety risks.

Even items you think are harmless can become dangerous under those conditions.

Bottom Line for Texas Drivers

Before you lock your car and walk away, take a quick look inside.

What you leave behind could cost you money, damage your belongings, or worse, put a life at risk. Out here in West Texas, the heat doesn’t play around, and neither should we.
