Do You Know What State Has the Highest Speed Limit In America?
Everything's Bigger in Texas: From BBQ to Highways
Texas is renowned not just for our motto "Everything is bigger in Texas," but also for boasting the best barbecue, exquisite Mexican food, the world's largest rodeo, and significant livestock production. Indeed, Texas leads the nation in revenue from beef sales, holding the top spot in cattle production, with over 20% of the country's output. This leadership extends to the value derived from the cattle raised within the state.
Fueling Travel with Beef Revenue
The extra cash generated from cattle in Texas proves useful, by helping us offset the price of fuel for extensive travel across the Lone star State's highways. Furthermore, we Texans claim to have the highest posted speed limits in North America. While most states cap their speed limits at 75 miles per hour (MPH), Texans can take pride in a maximum legal speed of 85 MPH.
The Need for Speed: Texas State Highway 130
If you feel the need for speed, head on over to Austin and find your way to Texas State Highway 130 (SH 130), also affectionately known as the Pickle Parkway. Be mindful, however, that SH 130 is a toll road. This stretch is particularly noteworthy as it allows legal travel at 85 MPH, bypassing the Austin metropolitan area entirely. Stretching from Interstate 35 (I-35) in San Antonio, through I-410 and I-10 to the east of Seguin, and then north as a tollway to I-35 north of Georgetown, SH 130 spans a 91-mile corridor to the east and south of Austin.

A Fast and Lonely Road
While I have driven the SH 130 several times, I must mention that it’s not the most scenic route but it compensates with speed. On my last few drives, I found it fast and sparsely populated, making for a lonely journey. Seriously, I was on this very toll road and the only other vehicle I saw that early Sunday morning was the eighteen-wheeler behind me trying to keep up. I swear those toll roads are long and lonely.
Caution on the Fast Lane
Nevertheless, it's important to stay alert. The lure of the road might tempt you to push the speedometer about 15 MPH beyond the limit. Keep an eye out, as both the Austin Police Department (APD) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) are vigilant on this turnpike. Happy travels and stay safe Y'all.
