Discover the Texas Highway Where You Can Drive Fast and Stay Legal
Texas is famous for a lot of things, and the one thing I hear over and over again from all my out-of-town friends is that "everything is so much bigger in the Lone Star State." Renowned for having the mouth-watering best barbecue, tantalizing Mexican food, the world's largest rodeo, and thriving livestock production and beef production. As one U.S. President once said, "Texas is HUGE!"
That extra cash we Texans make on our cattle industry comes in handy to help pay for the extra gas we use traveling up and down the Texas State highways, especially since Texas has the highest posted speed limits in North America (Mexico and Canada included). While most states have speed limits of up to 75 miles per hour (MPH), We Texans had to swell our chests and build a public highway where we can legally drive 85 MPH.
LOOK: You Can Drive 85mph On This Texas State Highway
Yep! 85 MPH, it's the highest speed limit in America as in North America. Plus, while in Texas, if you need speed, go to Austin and climb onto Texas State Highway 130 (SH 130). Mind you, it's a toll road, and you'll have to pay to drive 85 MPH legally. I have driven it and I'll admit I once looked down at my speedometer and discovered I was doing 92 MPH for about a mile or two.
Nonetheless, the road is so smooth that you lose track of time. The best news is that this stretch of road completely bypasses the Austin metropolitan area. This spicy slice of Texas State Highway 130 is also known as the Pickle Parkway.
So, if you've got a hot ride and you've got the "need for speed," take it out onto Texas State Highway 130 around Austin. Be aware that this highway it's not very scenic, but it is fast and lonely, and not too many people drive on it.
Nonetheless, be careful and stay alert because you will find yourself wanting to go about 15 MPH faster. Watch it, though; the Austin PD and DPS are active on the turnpike too. Happy travels.
