During the 44th annual Texas Water Utilities Association's Regional Water School, over 300 employees of municipalities and water districts in Central West Texas, judged tap water from cities throughout the State. Three cities in West Texas were winners of the 'Best Tasting Water' contest.

The Eastland County Water District won in their category for populations under 10,000, for the city of Strawn. Eastland County Water Supply District won for the 10,000 to 30,000 population category, and Abilene won in two different categories, the city's drinking water took the 'Overall Best Tasting Water' prize and the 'Best Surface Water' prize.

Abilene city water district employees noted that, "Abilene used to win the taste tests all the time, in recent years Abilene water won in 2009 and 2011".
