I'm sure I'm not the only one, but two of my favorite things are good food and the outdoors. If you put the two together, you have a picnic. Of course, picnics come in varieties. For example, cook-outs and gatherings. But, if it deals with any of the combinations, sign me up.

Having a simple picnic in a park takes me back to my childhood. Great, pleasant memories and good cookin'. The parks we went to seemed so huge back then. My friends and I could spend all afternoon on that playground, music in the background, the smell of burgers and dogs sizzling, yes indeed.

I'm here to tell you, that picnics are not dead.

I've always been a big fan of the 3 F's. Food, Family, and Friends. You've got all 3 with a picnic. But, the place you go is just as important as the gathering itself. Parks are just the best. Wide-open spaces, plenty of room to toss the football around while the meal is being prepared. Fortunately, Abilene has plenty of great parks and pavilions you can go to.

Keep scrolling and take your pick. Abilene has some of the best parks around. It's important to note that most require reservations for gatherings and events.

You'll notice that these pavilions and picnic areas are covered and that's a good thing. This time of year when you want to be out and active yet not burn to a crisp in this Texas sun, the more shade the better.

When you're ready to make plans, check out this document for even more pictures and information. After all the food and fun you can stand you'll probably want to cool down from this summer heat. I have just the idea, take a road trip and cool down in an official Texas swimming hole. Check out the below.
