We've got troubles in Texas, as yet another cockfighting ring is caught red-handed and busted for hosting the deadly cockfights. For the fourth time in just 60 days, yet another illegal cockfighting ring, this time in Far East Texas near Wolfe City has authorities rescuing several dozen birds.

Growing up, I heard about cockfights from family members who attended them. I never saw one, but I still don’t understand the appeal. What’s the thrill in watching roosters tear each other apart for entertainment? Sadly, these underground events attract millions in gambling dollars and operate like organized crime rings.

A Tip Leads to a Takedown

This latest bust came after Animal Wellness Action (AWA) and SHARK received a tip and alerted the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies stormed the derby in progress, arrested 21 individuals, and seized 67 roosters, many requiring medical care. About 100 people were in attendance.

This marks the fourth cockfight these groups helped break up in March alone. Other busts occurred in Ellis, Martin, and Titus counties, with varying levels of law enforcement response. The AWA says it’s working to eliminate cockfighting not just in Texas, but across the nation.

A Bigger Problem at the Border

According to authorities, some participants are in the U.S. unlawfully, and many of these events have ties to international trafficking, especially from Mexico where cockfighting remains legal in some areas. Border seizures include steroids, razor-sharp gaffs, and even birds hidden in vehicles.

Finally, I saw a guy at a concert two weeks ago wearing a cockfighting t-shirt that said, “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!” But here in Texas, it’s not a game. It’s a crime. And it’s cruelty, plain and simple.

Penalties in Texas: From Fines to Felonies

If a person is caught participating in cockfighting in Texas, it typically starts as a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500. However, depending on the circumstances, such as repeat offenses, organized activity, or animal cruelty, it can escalate to a felony, carrying a $10,000 fine and up to two years in a state jail. In closing, as I sit here in the studio reading yet another heartbreaking press release, I’m reminded: It’s time we end this for good.
