This Texas K-9 Is Trained to Protect Leaders-And He’s a Beast
Meet Magnum: Texas’ New Elite Executive Protection K-9
My friend, Sergeant Mark Couch with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), recently introduced me to the newest, most elite member of Texas’ Executive Protection Bureau, Magnum, a one-year-old Belgian Malinois. When Mark first told me about this highly trained K-9 and showed me some photos, I was instantly intrigued. Magnum isn’t just any working dog, he’s a top-tier, executive protection K-9, trained to detect explosives, assess threats, and safeguard Texas leaders, high-ranking officials, and dignitaries.
After hearing about his skills, all I could think was, I gotta get me one of these dogs.
A Canine with a Mission
Magnum, who hails from Poland, completed an intensive 12-week training program specializing in explosive detection. His job is to identify potential threats, enhance security operations, and provide an extra layer of protection for state officials.
DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin emphasized Magnum’s role, stating,
“Adding Magnum to the Executive Protection Bureau ensures we continue to provide the highest level of security for Texas leaders. This highly trained K-9 is an invaluable asset, solidifying both detection and deterrence capabilities in our security operations.”
Magnum replaces K-9 Jake, who made history in 2018 as the first Explosive Ordinance Detection K-9 assigned to the Executive Protection Bureau (EPB). After six years of dedicated service, Jake retired in November 2024, paving the way for Magnum to take the lead in safeguarding Texas officials.

The Elite Training Behind Magnum
Magnum is part of DPS’ elite K-9 program, which includes 76 handlers and 88 personnel, featuring a variety of highly trained dogs specializing in narcotics detection, explosives detection, and tracking. These canines undergo rigorous training to prepare for high-pressure security situations, ensuring public safety and operational excellence.
Belgian Malinois, like Magnum, are known for their intelligence, agility, and unwavering loyalty, making them perfect for high-stakes law enforcement roles.
What is the Executive Protection Bureau?
Originally known as the Governor’s Protection Detail, the Executive Protection Bureau (EPB) was established in the early 1970s. Over the years, its mission has expanded under DPS Homeland Security Operations. Today, EPB provides security planning, risk management, and threat assessment for the Governor of Texas, the Governor’s Mansion, and visiting dignitaries.
Officers within the EPB travel across the state, country, and even internationally to protect Texas’ top officials, ensuring their safety at all times.
A Four-Legged Guardian
With Magnum now on duty, Texas’ security just gained a powerful new ally. Whether he’s detecting threats, accompanying state leaders, or standing guard at the Capitol, Magnum is ready for action.
And who knows? With his skillset, he might one day find himself on a mission to protect national leaders. One thing is certain, Magnum isn’t just a dog. He’s Texas’ newest four-legged guardian.
