Advice From A Great Man

I received some great advice early on in life by a great man who had the same last name as I did, he was my dad. Dad was in the U.S. Air Force for over 26 years, he served in the U.S. and all over the world. I clearly recall him saying "never stop looking for your next job, because if you want to move up, you'll need to learn new skills, you'll continue to grow, and you'll never go hungry." Since that day, I have always kept an open eye for my next employment opportunity.

Texas Continues to Lead the Nation in Job Growth

When we finally settled in Texas I recall him saying "of all the States I've served in, Texas is always looking for good hard workers." And if the truth be known, Texas is once again proving itself as the economic powerhouse of the United States. Recently, Governor Greg Abbott announced that for the third year in a row, the Lone Star state has added more jobs than any other state, proving that Texas is our country's leader in creating the most jobs.

Record-Breaking Job Growth in 2024

According to the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Texas grew by an impressive 284,200 nonfarm jobs from December 2023 to December 2024. Yep, we outpaced every state in America. This milestone highlights the state's resilience, economic strength, business-friendly practices , and us, the strong workforce in America.

Governor Abbott emphasized that more Texans are working today than at any other time in history, the Governor said "It's because of the state's economic policies, investment in education, and commitment to workforce development. Like my dad used to say, "Always be learning on how to improve and be the best at your job, keep your nose to the grindstone, and always keep an eye out for your next best job opportunity. And so long as you live in Texas you'll make it boy."

Abbott went on to say "Texas is America’s undisputed jobs leader, and by unleashing the power of entrepreneurs and innovators and investing in education excellence and career training, we will remain the national leader in job creation."

Texas Unemployment Rate Hits Historic Lows

While the job market continues to expand, Texas has also seen a sharp decline in unemployment since the pandemic. Since COVID-19, the unemployment rate in Texas has dropped by over 40%, marking one of the fastest recoveries in the country.

Here in West Texas and the Big Country region, the numbers are even more encouraging. Abilene and surrounding communities have outpaced the state’s already strong job growth, with unemployment rates significantly lower than in previous years.

Why Texas Continues to Succeed: Labor Market Statistics

Several factors contribute to Texas' booming job market:

  • Pro-Business Climate – With no state income tax and policies that encourage economic growth, Texas remains a top destination for businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Diverse Economy – Industries like technology, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing continue to expand, creating jobs across various sectors.
  • Workforce Investment – The state's focus on education, vocational training, and workforce development ensures that Texans are equipped for high-demand careers. Source: Governor Abbott Press Office.gov

The Future Looks Even Brighter For West Texas

As the Governor works with Texas leaders to expand our economic opportunities, the Lone Star State is growing the job market. Case and point in the Big Country with the growth of an AI Research Center, a nuclear power facility, and the growth at Dyess Air Force Base Texas remains the backbone of America’s economic success. For west Texans, this means more career opportunities, financial stability, and a bright future ahead.
