WARNING: Texas Shoppers Beware Fruit Bars Recalled for Glass

There are some food recalls that immediately make me stop and check the refrigerator or freezer. This is definitely one of them.

Dreyer's has voluntarily recalled certain Outshine Fruit Bars because of the possibility that glass could be inside the product.

Just thinking about biting into a frozen fruit bar and finding glass is enough for me. This is one recall I want Texas families to know about before somebody reaches into the freezer for an afternoon snack.

Which Outshine Fruit Bars Are Recalled?

The recall includes select lots of five flavors of Outshine six-count, 2.5-ounce fruit bars:

• Strawberry
• Watermelon
• Grape
• Tangerine
• Black Cherry

Certain 24-count Outshine Variety Packs are also included. The affected products were distributed to retailers nationwide, meaning Texans should check packages they have at home.

The FDA says no other Outshine products or varieties are included in this recall.

Why Were the Fruit Bars Recalled?

According to the FDA-posted company announcement, Dreyer's initiated the voluntary recall after receiving consumer reports of glass being found in the product.

Fortunately, no illnesses or injuries had been reported as of the company's August 18 announcement.

That's good news, but possible glass contamination is not something I'd take chances with. A piece of glass could potentially injure someone while they're eating, which is reason enough to check the package before serving another bar.

Check the Batch Code Before Throwing Everything Away

This is not a recall of every Outshine fruit bar. The recall involves specific batch codes and Best Before dates printed on the bottom of affected packages.

Because there are numerous affected batch numbers, the safest move is to compare the number on your package with the complete FDA recall list rather than assuming every box of Strawberry, Watermelon, Grape, Tangerine or Black Cherry bars is affected.

Consumers who have one of the recalled packages are advised to dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone who believes they may have been injured after consuming one of the affected products should contact a healthcare provider.

Food recalls come and go, but this is precisely why I believe they're worth sharing. It only takes a few seconds to look at a box in your freezer, and those few seconds could keep someone in your family from getting hurt.
