Watch Jimmy Fallon and Miley Cyrus Channel Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers for a Duet
When you put a blond wig and buxom bosom on Miley Cyrus and a meticulously groomed silver wig and beard on Jimmy Fallon, you end up with two very familiar faces: Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Cyrus teamed up with show host Fallon to cover Parton and Rogers' "Islands in the Stream" ... while dressed as the two country icons.
"Islands in the Stream" was written by the Bee Gees and released in 1983 as the first single from Rogers' Eyes That See in the Dark album. If you're not watching the video above carefully, you might actually find yourself thinking that it's really Parton and Rogers on the stage -- Cyrus and Fallon truly transform for the performance.
Cyrus is Parton's goddaughter, and she's channeled the legendary country star before: Back in 2012, she shared a cover of Parton‘s classic hit “Jolene.” The pop singer's newest record features Parton on a song called "Rainbowland" as well.
“She’s like a little Elvis!” Parton once told The Boot of Cyrus. “What people don’t realize about her is, she is such a fantastic singer and songwriter. She writes songs like she’s 40 years old! She’s really deep. I know I’m partial, because she’s my goddaughter. But I’m amazed at the talent that child has and the effect she has on people.”
Though "Islands in the Stream" is more than 30 years old, it's still loved today, and is one of Parton and Rogers' most popular duets. The two have been friends for decades, and Rogers considers Parton one of his favorite duet partners. Most recently, they sang together on the title track of Rogers' 2013 album, You Can't Make Old Friends.
“I can’t think of a more perfect song for the two of us to sing together,” Rogers says of the tune. “Out of everyone in the business, Dolly is my best friend, so naturally it has special meaning for the both of us. It was so good to be back in the studio with her. I’m thrilled to have our relationship documented this way."
“There is just something about our chemistry with each other – our friendship – that people really sense what we really feel,” Parton adds. “To do a song that fits so many people, and certainly us, was an honor. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to walk this road with Kenny.”
