If you love dogs as much as I do, then mark your calendar now. One of my favorite family-friendly events of the year is coming back to Abilene, and it's all for a great cause.

As I'm writing this article, I'm getting ready to help rescue an injured feral cat that's been struggling to survive in a neighborhood where other cats have been keeping it away from food. That's just part of what animal lovers do. Whether it's cats, dogs, birds, or any animal in need, we step up when we can.

That's why events like the Rescue the Animals Dachshund Races mean so much to me.

Rescue The Animals Returns To Festival Gardens

The annual Rescue the Animals Dachshund Races and Rescued Dog Reunion returns Thursday, June 11, at Festival Gardens in Nelson Park, directly across from the Abilene Zoo.

The gates open at 5 p.m., and the fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Rescued Dog Reunion Homecoming, giving families the chance to show off the dogs they've adopted and celebrate the second chance these animals received.

Then at 7 p.m., it's time for the main event: the Dachshund Races.

If you've never seen dozens of wiener dogs racing toward the finish line, you're missing out on one of the funniest and most entertaining events in West Texas.

More Than Just A Dog Race

While the races are the big attraction, this event is really about saving lives.

Rescue the Animals is a nonprofit organization that works tirelessly to save animals that have run out of time in local shelters. The organization helps transport those animals to communities where loving families are waiting to adopt them.

Bring The Family And Your Four-Legged Friends

One of the things I love most about this event is seeing local animal lovers come together for a fun evening supporting a great cause.

In years past, there have been water stations to help keep pets cool during the summer heat. I even remember a few dogs deciding the water tubs were better suited as personal swimming pools than drinking stations.

While I can't promise those tubs will be back this year, I can promise you'll see plenty of wagging tails, smiling faces, and memorable moments.

Helping Animals Makes Our Community Stronger

Whether you're a dog owner, animal lover, or simply looking for a fun evening with the family, this event is worth attending.

The Dachshund Races are free to attend, but donations are always appreciated and help Rescue the Animals continue its lifesaving work.

I'll see you there, and if you're anything like me, don't be surprised if you leave wanting to adopt another furry friend.
