2023 for the first time in its history saw the Abilene Animal Shelter at 925 South 25th street being taken over by a nonprofit organization known as ALL KIND Animal Initiative. All Kind organizers have made it clear from the very get-go, that their goal is to build a new animal shelter in Abilene among other things.

For the second time this year, the shelter is closed due to an outbreak. This time the outbreak is distemper. After testing and checking every animal within the Abilene Animal Shelter, the tests for distemper and a couple of parvo cases did test positive.

Press release from ALL KIND Animal Initiative:

We have tests results back. The results were  positive for canine parvo and distemper. Many parts of Texas are fighting these same illnesses. We will remain closed until further notice to try and contain the spread. We are disinfecting the facility every day. The lobby will remain open for voucher purchases, owner reclaims, and cat adoptions. We are in need of fosters that do not currently have other dogs in the home. Please message us if you would be willing to be a short-term foster. Source: Andrea Ribinsob ALL Kind's Abilene Animal Shelter

ALL KIND has always had the plan to increase pet retention in Abilene through its pet fostering. Currently, while they continue working to clear the distemper they are looking for volunteer fosters that have no animals in their homes and are willing to shelter a pet. If that is you please reach out to the Animal Shelter.

The organization has always had a clear goal to decrease pet homelessness in Abilene and around the Big Country. Furthermore, they are working toward ending animal overpopulation by being more proactive with access to all kinds of spay/neuter programs and options.

Once the shelter gets the all-clear, All Kind will continue with its plans to increase pet retention through expanded foster programs, hosting adoption events, and offering greater education and resources through "community outreach."

Andrea Robinson with ALL KIND Animal Initiative says "Abilene is not the only city battling with this outbreak. Many parts of Texas are fighting these illnesses as well."

Again, the shelter says "The lobby will remain open for voucher purchases, owner reclaims, and cat adoptions. However, we are in need of fosters that do not currently have other dogs in the home. Please message us if you would be willing to be a short-term foster."

If you want to help and/or volunteer message ALL KIND or call the shelter at (325) 698-0085.
