International Motorcycles, trikes, scooters, and other two or three-wheeled 'motorized' modes of transportation for Ride to Work Day celebrate the joys of riding these vehicles. It's also a day to raise awareness of motorcyclists, scooters, and trikes on the road and to demonstrate the benefits of riding.

Celebrate Safe Motorcycle Commuting in Abilene on Ride to Work Day

Some of these benefits include lower fuel consumption, less road congestion, and shorter, more relaxing commute times. This fun annual event takes place on the third Friday of June; this year, it’s set for June 21st, 2024.

Locally, many motorcyclists will be riding together to celebrate the annual event. Everyone is asked to meet at the Taylor County Expo Center at 11 AM. At 11:20 AM, there will be the 'All Participants Photo,' and at exactly 11:30 AM, it's kickstands up and the 'Ride to Work' commute will begin.

Ride to Work Day champions and supports the use of motorcycles for transportation and raises awareness that we all share the road, so “Look Twice, Save a Life.” I'll say it again: “Look Twice, Save a Life” is very important, especially since recently there have been three motorcycle fatalities due to crashes in the Big Country.

The first Ride to Work Day event was held on July 22, 1992. The event continued to grow as an informal grassroots demonstration every year until 2000. That year, the non-profit organization Ride to Work was formed to help organize and promote Ride to Work Day.

The first Ride to Work Day event led by this group was on the third Wednesday in July of 2001. This day was the annual event until 2008 when it was changed to the third Monday in June. This change was made to climatically better accommodate riders worldwide and to allow more riders to participate.

In 2024, this event was moved to the second Tuesday in June. In Abilene, this event has been held every year since 2012 (except for 2020). We have great participation with around 100 riders. See you Friday, June 21st at the Taylor County Expo Center at 11 AM.

This Year West Texas Ride To Work Sponsors are D.R.I.V.E. Safe Coalition, Kent’s Harley Davidson, Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization, City of Abilene, Texas Department of Transportation, Abilene Police Department, Abilene Safety Instruction, and Expo Center of Taylor County.
