Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene Will Host Special Memorial Day Ceremonies for Veterans

 

Texas State Veterans Cemetery (TSVC) in Abilene will be holding a very special ceremony for all veterans Monday, May 27, Memorial Day beginning at 10:00am. This ceremony will honor all veterans and will feature Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Robert J. Strader as the events guest speaker. Veterans, their families and friends are all encouraged to attend this special event.

26th Annual ‘TET Reunion’ for Veterans is Scheduled for February 2nd in Abilene

The 26th Annual 'TET Reunion' honoring all Veterans, is scheduled for Saturday, February 2nd starting at 12:00 noon at the Taylor County Expo center. All Veteransand their families are welcomed, and encouraged to bring their photo's and memorabilia from their era of service. The TET reunion was started by Vietnam Vets but is open to all Vets, no matter the era of service. There will be food, drinks, displays, memorabilia and a USO kind of show.

The Abilene Veteran’s Thanksgiving Day Dinner is Still in Dire Need of Money

The annual Veteran's Thanksgiving Day Dinner will take place this year, however in the future it may be a thing of the past in Abilene, if local organizers can't raise the necessary funds to support such an event. According to Jimmy DeFoor with the Taylor County Veterans Service Office, he says over the years, donations have fallen off and the same goes for volunteers. While this years feast has been saved the future of the event is still on questionable grounds.

Abilene’s McMurry University to Honor Veterans with “A Salute to Our Military” on Thursday, November 8th

With Veterans Day coming up on Monday, Nov. 12th. McMurry University will honor all veterans with a special program entitled “A Salute to Our Military.” The program will feature a panel discussion titled “An Informed View of Military Experience and Historical Narratives” with an emphasis on the Vietnam era. Plus a military panel question and answer session and student readings from 'The Things They Carried' by Tim O’Brien and 'Platoon Leader' by James McDonough. The event is free and open to the public.

Wreaths Across America Comes to the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene December 15th [VIDEO]

As we celebrate Veteran’s Day on Saturday November 10th, by thanking and remembering those men and women of our armed forces, both past and present. I am reminded of another day that I discovered last December. Nationwide the 2nd Saturday of December is declared by the Congress of the United States as, Wreaths Across America Day. On Saturday, December 15th, volunteers across America will place wreaths on each headstone at Arlington cemetery in Washington D.C. and at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.

Aaron Watson’s New Song Honors Veterans and Raises Money for Charity

Texas music artist Aaron Watson dropped by the studio to bring me his new song, "Raise Your Bottle". The song was inspired by both his grandpa a WWII veteran and his dad a Vietnam war veteran. The song pays tribute to his kin folk and all veterans alike. Furthermore the profits from the song will go to a veterans charity called the Boot Campaign.

Congressman Neugebauer Tours New VA Facility

The grand opening of the new VA clinic in Abilene is taking place Monday January 9th at 10:30am. Helping with the ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremonies is Congressman Randy Neugebauer, the Congressman will be the featured speaker too. The new bigger VA facility is located at 3850 Ridgemont Drive in the old Toys-R-Us building.

Which College Is the Best for Military Veterans?

A recent survey conducted by Military Times Edge ranks which colleges are best for military veterans.

Most of the schools making the list were public, including 51 of the 59 highest ranking four-year schools. The top five four-year schools included Concord University, taking the number one spot, Eastern Kentucky University at number two, Rutgers in third, California University of Pennsylvania at number four and University of South Florida coming in fifth.
