Singer/songwriter Madonna Nash was inspired to write the song 'Don't Leave' by a friend who is a military wife. All the wife was asking for, was a little more time with the man she so dearly loves. The song struck a nerve with me because I remember when I was a kid, mom saying the very same thing to my dad before he was deployed to Vietnam. It's the very same thing I envision many military spouses doing all over West Texas, being that we are a big Military town. One last thing, as I watched the video I not only felt her pain but her loneliness as well. Check it out.

If you have a child of elementary age you've probably heard of "Flat Stanley". Flat Stanley is a paper cutout that the kids put in the mail and send him off on adventures. He has his pictures taken all over the states or world even and returns with the photos and documentation of his travels. The kids learn of different states or parts of the world from Stanley's adventures. The military has now taken that idea a step further for those families that have a member overseas serving our country.

A recent survey conducted by Military Times Edge ranks which colleges are best for military veterans.

Most of the schools making the list were public, including 51 of the 59 highest ranking four-year schools. The top five four-year schools included Concord University, taking the number one spot, Eastern Kentucky University at number two, Rutgers in third, California University of Pennsylvania at number four and University of South Florida coming in fifth.

The policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which has been in place since the Clinton administration, became a thing of the past at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday when the United States became one of more than 40 countries worldwide allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces.

“They will no longer have to lie in order to help protect us,” said Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin in a statement. “The end of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is an important victory not just for equality, but integrity.”

I sure love it when our family comes together to celebrate whatever occasion may be at hand. Good food, lots of love, plenty of laughter and we can guarantee the celebration will move into the silly department in short order. Memorial Day was a great time to be had by all. I spent it with many of my relatives some of whom have served in our great Nations awesome Military and some that are still serving.
