Ryan Lochte’s Twitter Is Getting ‘Weird’

They should probably just call the 2012 Summer Olympics the “Twitter Games,” as the microblogging service has been part of quite a few of the story lines so far in London.

American swimmer Ryan Lochte is one of the many athletes at the games to maintain an active Twitter account. An account that got even more popular when the 27-year-old started off the Olympics with a defeat of rival Michael Phelps and a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley.

But since then things haven’t gone as well for Lochte. First there was a weak performance in the 4x100m freestyle team event that may have cost the U.S. gold, and then he had a surprise fourth place finish in the 200m freestyle race that he was expected to medal in.

After being shut out in the 200, Lochte took to Twitter and got, by his own admission, “weird.” Check out the Olympian’s offbeat tweets below.

What do you think about Olympic athletes tweeting? Is it an interesting insight into the mind of a competitor? Or do you think social network activity distracts the athletes from the task at hand?
