Yes! In Texas Snipe Hunting Is Real and You’ll Need a License
Yes, I'm being serious, snipe hunting in Texas is real and you will need a hunting license. I remember as a child growing up, whenever we visited grandparents or any of our other relative's places every time the weather was nice outside we would go snipe hunting in the evenings after dark.
To be able to go snipe hunting all you needed was a switch (a twig from a tree) to a flashlight and a bag to put all the snipes in. Then one of the relatives would tell the story of the snipes and how sneaky they are, so you have to be on the lookout.
Did I ever get a snipe in the bag? The answer to that is absolutely not. Seriously, snipe hunting was simply a chance for other family members to hide and then jump out from behind a tree, a shrub, or behind the barn or a shed just to scare the living life out of us as we'd then go running back to grandma and grandpas house screaming and yelling.
A Snipe is a migratory bird that is also known as Wilson's Snipe or a Jacksnipe
However, if you are a serious hunter and outdoorsman you know exactly what "snipe hunting" is and it's not scaring children on a hot summer evening. A snipe is a migratory bird that can be either a Wilson Snipe or Jacksnipe.
The Texas hunting license that is required to go snipe hunting, must have a migratory bird endorsement, a federal duck stamp, and your HIP certification.
The Texas Migratory Bird Requirements
A Migratory Game Bird Endorsement is required to hunt any migratory game bird (waterfowl, coot, rail, gallinule, snipe, dove, sandhill crane, and woodcock). A valid Federal Duck Stamp and your HIP Certification. All three are required of waterfowl hunters 16 years of age or older. When you purchase a hunting license, indicate to the license clerk that you intend to hunt migratory game birds and you may have to answer a few simple questions. Interestingly, snipes are also very vocal birds in fact some bird watchers call them singing birds as you'll see and hear them in the video below. if someone asks you to go snipe hunting just reach for your shotgun and then watch their reaction. Happy hunting!
