Strong Storms Could Hit West Texas — Are You Ready?
Storm season is knocking on the door in West Texas, and the next round is expected to move through Abilene beginning tonight and into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, showers and thunderstorms are likely late Friday into Saturday, with the potential for gusty winds, hail, and heavy rainfall. While Sunday looks calmer, this system is a reminder that spring weather in Texas can shift quickly.
This isn’t unusual for February in West Texas. Warm, breezy days followed by strong frontal systems are part of our seasonal transition pattern. But when thunderstorms are in the forecast, preparation matters.
1 - Be Safe
If warnings are issued, take them seriously. Don’t wait to “see what happens.” Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms can develop quickly, day or night.
Have multiple ways to receive alerts:
- Wireless emergency alerts on your phone
- Weather apps with notifications must be enabled
- NOAA weather radio

2 - Be Prepared
At my house, our safe spot is the innermost bathtub in the center of the house, with no windows. We keep moving blankets and sofa cushions nearby for protection, and a fully charged phone, ready to use.
After losing water and electricity during the 2024 snowstorm, I also made sure we have backup power options and emergency supplies. Severe weather doesn’t give warnings about convenience. Remember, preparation is peace of mind.
3 - Know Where to Go
If a tornado warning is issued:
- Go to the lowest level of your home
- Choose an interior room
- Stay away from windows
- Cover yourself with cushions or blankets
Mobile homes and vehicles are not safe shelters. Identify a sturdier building ahead of time if needed.
West Texas storms can pop up fast. Stay weather-aware over the next few days and make sure your family knows the plan before you need it.
Because when it comes to severe weather, I always say, "Preparation is not panic, it is responsibility."
