Summer vacation season is finally here, and if you're anything like me, you're probably focused on getting packed, loading the vehicle, and making sure everyone is ready to hit the road.

But before you pull out of the driveway, there are a few simple things that can save you from coming home to a major headache.

Living in West Texas, I've learned that a little preparation can go a long way. Here are five things I always recommend checking before leaving for vacation.

1) Put A Hold On Your Mail

Nothing says "nobody's home" quite like a mailbox overflowing with letters and packages.

If you'll be gone for several days, consider placing a temporary hold on your mail or asking a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor to collect it while you're away.

2) Check Your Air Conditioner

West Texas summers can be brutal. Before leaving, make sure your air conditioner is working properly and set at a reasonable temperature.

You don't want to come home to a hot house, spoiled food, or worse, damage caused by excessive heat.

3) Water Your Plants

Whether they're inside or outside, plants don't know you're on vacation.

Take time to water them before leaving or arrange for someone to stop by if you'll be gone for an extended period.

4) Let A Trusted Neighbor Know

One of the best security systems is still a good neighbor.

Let someone you trust know you'll be away. They can keep an eye on your home, move trash cans if needed, and alert you if something doesn't look right.

5) Secure Valuables Before You Go

Take a few minutes to lock doors, check windows, and secure valuables before leaving.

It's also a good idea to avoid announcing your vacation plans on social media until after you return home.

Enjoy Your Trip

A few minutes of preparation can help make your vacation much more enjoyable. The goal is simple: relax while you're away and avoid surprises when you get back home.

Safe travels, West Texas, and enjoy your summer adventures.
