It’s Texas’ Worst Case of Measles in Over 3 Decades
Learn about the ongoing measles outbreak in West Texas, and why vaccination is crucial to prevent the further epidemic spread of this viral infection.
One thing that I believe is certain measles is a viral infection that can be avoided especially if you are vaccinated. For the last 30 years Texas and the United States of America have nearly extinguished measles. So where did this last bout that we are battling now come from?
How Fast Will Measles Spread Across Texas?
We know that a person who has been exposed to measles and has not been vaccinated will start showing signs of the viral infection within eight to ten days after being exposed to the virus. So why are we West Texans grappling with the largest measles outbreak in over three decades?
Why Texas' Gaines County Is at the Center of the Crisis
The Texas Department of Health Services (DSHS) is reporting that there have been over 58 cases diagnosed in the West Texas area alone since Friday, February 14th. Furthermore, many governmental and medical officials across the state attribute the outbreak in West Texas, particularly in Gaines County, to the low vaccination rates within a close-knit Mennonite community.

What Texans are Most at Risk?
As of today (Feb. 18, 2025), there are 58 confirmed cases, with 48 in Gaines County alone and more cases showing up daily in neighboring counties. Health officials report confirmed cases across the Lone Star State, primarily in West Texas. So far, over a dozen individuals are hospitalized. Most of those affected are unvaccinated children 5 to 17 years old. Source: DSHS.TEXAS.GO
Measles Symptoms and Why It’s Dangerous
The Texas Department of State Health Services reported that over the last four weeks, the agency has identified over 50 confirmed cases of measles, which is characterized by rashes that can cover the entire body, along with a high fever and cold symptoms. Most of the cases are children younger than 18, and every confirmed case is unvaccinated. Furthermore, children stand a better chance of surviving the outbreak if attended to immediately. However, Measles is one of the world’s most contagious viruses, and yes, it can be deadly.
My Final Thoughts
The Texas Department of Health and Human Services is closely monitoring the outbreak. Officials urge Texans to stay informed and take steps to protect their families. Measles spreads fast, and prevention is possible. For updates, visit Texas Health and Human Services.
