Jury Duty Called Off Monday in Texas: What It Means for You
When Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley sends out the call for media assistance, you know it matters. Judge Crowley is asking all West Texans to help spread the word: If you received a jury duty summons for Monday, November 17, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., you do NOT need to report. All jury cases for that day have been canceled.

This is unusual, extremely unusual, and as someone who has spent decades broadcasting across West Texas, I can honestly say I’ve rarely seen a county cancel jury duty outright. But this time, the judge has a very specific reason for reaching out.
Why the Announcement Matters
According to Judge Crowley, the jury summons phone line (325-674-1272) is currently down, meaning many citizens may not be able to verify the cancellation themselves. That’s why media outlets like ours were asked to help get the message out as quickly as possible.
This cancellation applies only to Monday, November 17. If you have a summons for any other date, nothing has changed.
Do You Still Have to Attend Jury Duty in Texas?
Yes, and this is where your civic duty kicks in.
Under Texas law, when you receive a jury summons, you are required to respond unless you receive official notice of cancellation from the county. Failing to show up without an exemption or rescheduling request can lead to fines or even contempt.
Even though Monday’s docket no longer requires a jury, every other scheduled jury day remains fully active.
Why Courts Sometimes Cancel Jury Panels
While rare, cancellations happen when:
- A defendant accepts a plea
- Cases settle at the last minute
- Evidence or witness issues arise
- Or the court’s schedule changes.
It simply means a jury isn’t needed that day, not that juries are unimportant.
What To Do If You're Unsure
Since the phone line is down, residents should:
- Double-check the date on their summons
- Look for official notices from Taylor County
- And only consider their duty canceled if it specifically states Monday, Nov. 17, 2025.
If in doubt, you can always contact the district clerk’s office through their main office line.
This is a great opportunity to remind West Texans that jury duty is not only a requirement, it’s a cornerstone of justice in our state. Monday may be an exception, but our commitment to showing up when called is what keeps our system fair and strong.
