It’s Not Just About Sex Trafficking

When most people hear “human trafficking,” they think of sex crimes, and yes, that’s part of it. But trafficking also includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and the exploitation of minors through online recruitment or manipulation. Here in West Texas, local authorities say it’s often hiding in plain sight, from restaurants and construction sites to online ads and social media.

What It Really Means

Human trafficking happens when someone uses force, fraud, or coercion to control another person for profit. Victims can be anyone, men, women, or children, often promised jobs or a better life, only to find themselves trapped. It’s modern-day slavery, and it’s happening right here in our own backyard.

Why It’s Happening

Human trafficking thrives on vulnerability and profit. Traffickers exploit people struggling with poverty, homelessness, or emotional instability.

  • Economic hardship: Many victims are lured by false promises of good jobs or security.
  • Lack of safety nets: Runaway youth, foster children, and those without family support are at high risk.
  • Conflict and disaster: People displaced by war or crisis become easy targets.
  • Emotional manipulation: Traffickers often use affection or promises of love to control victims.
Because it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry with low risk of punishment, traffickers continue preying on the vulnerable.

Signs to Watch For

Be alert to anyone who:

  • Avoids eye contact or seems afraid to speak freely.
  • Works long hours with little or no pay.
  • Is accompanied by someone controlling their ID or money.

If you suspect trafficking, call 911 or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
