Tony Romo Expected to Miss 8 to 10 Weeks With Broken Collarbone
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken left collarbone for the second time in five years Sunday against the Eagles, and he's going to be out a while.
Romo took a sack by Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks and landed hard on his left shoulder. And it was a feeling he was all too familiar with. He could be seen mouthing "It's broken" on his way to the locker room after leaving the field.
"I felt it," Romo said after the Cowboys' 20-10 win Sunday, according to ESPN Dallas. "It had a little bit of a pop to it. Obviously, I've felt it before. Your body goes into a little bit of shock and you just have to wait it out for a second to come back."
The Cowboys' star quarterback is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks, ESPN Dallas reported. He missed 10 games in 2010 with the same injury. It is possible the Cowboys will place him on the injured reserve/designated to return list, which means he would miss at least eight weeks.
Romo's injury was the second major blow to the 2-0 Cowboys in as many weeks. Last week Dallas lost superstar wide receiver Dez Bryant for at least four to six weeks -- though many estimate it will be longer -- with a broken bone in his foot.
The earliest estimated return for Romo is Nov. 15 against Tampa Bay. Though if he misses 10 weeks like in 2010, he could return on Thanksgiving Day against Carolina.
"We said a lot of prayers while they were evaluating [Romo]," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones told ESPN Dallas. "We never would've thought after two ballgames we'd have no Tony Romo, no Dez Bryant, even no [Randy] Gregory, the way he was playing. On the other hand, this is the life we chose and we know good and well this can happen to you."
Backup quarterback Brandon Weeden will take over as the Cowboys' starter. He went 7-for-7 passing with a 42-yard touchdown to Terrance Williams on Sunday against Philly.
While the Cowboys are undoubtedly the unhappiest 2-0 team in the NFL right now, the silver lining is both the Eagles and New York Giants are 0-2 and Dallas has wins over both. The Cowboys are currently one game ahead of Washington (1-1) in the NFC East.
