If the only knowledge you have about the history of the Titanic is what you saw in the blockbuster film starring Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, here's your chance to get properly educated.

“The Titanic Remembered Centennial Exhibition” opened this week at The Discovery Center of Abilene. This has got to be one of the coolest, most historic exhibits in the state, and it's thanks to the late Jack Grimm, an Abilene native who spent much of his life in search of the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912.

Scientists credit Grimm – in his many expeditions to find the sunken ship – for producing invaluable data about the configuration of the ocean floor. Some argue that Grimm should be credited with the first photographic evidence of the Titanic underwater. His discoveries, and stories of many of the amazing eyewitness accounts of the sinking of the"Unsinkable" ship are on display.

This is a great place to take an inquisitive kid over 8 years old, or for adults to go and learn something more about an historic world event, without leaving the city. Expect to spend about an hour looking over all the displays in the exhibit.

The Discovery Center's “The Titanic Remembered Centennial Exhibition” is particularly unique in that it is the only continuous Titanic exhibition in the state of Texas. In addition to featuring 12 exhibit areas, actors will be telling stories of people who lived out the historic event.

Special events accompanying Titanic Remembered include:

  • Saturday, April 14, hear stories (from live actors) of people who lived out this historic event
  • Monday, April 16 at 7:00pm at The Paramount Theater, watch the movie "Search For The Titanic", produced by Abilene's Jack Grimm, narrated by Orson Welles and Jack Drury

The Discovery Center is located at 810 Butternut (on the corner of S. 8th). Admission is free, and donations are accepted (suggested donation $3.50 for adults, $2.50 children, military and seniors). Exhibit hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday through Friday, and Saturdays 1pm-5pm. To book large groups or classes, call The Discovery Center at 325.673.5050.
