It’s True Texas Is Gaining Recognition For Its Wine Quality
Texas Vintners Cup Proves Texas Wine Is Bigger Than Ever
I’ll be the first to admit it, I’m not exactly a wine connoisseur. Give me a sweet red like Roscato Rosso Dolce or a fruit-filled sangria, and I’m a happy man. But I had no idea Texas had its own major wine competition called the Texas Vintners Cup, and honestly, that surprised me.

Growing up in a military family, I lived all over the world, including Spain, Italy, France, Greece, and Japan, before eventually making my way back home to Texas. One of my earliest memories from Spain was seeing sweet red sangria at family gatherings. To this day, if I enjoy a wine, it’s usually a sweet red and only in moderation.
Turns out, Texas wine is becoming a really big deal.

Texas Wines Continue To Gain National Attention
The Texas Department of Agriculture and its Uncork Texas Wines program have officially launched the 2026 Texas Vintners Cup, a statewide competition designed to crown the 12 best wines in Texas.
Now in its sixth year, the Texas Vintners Cup has become one of the state’s premier wine competitions. Organizers say it’s the only competition in Texas dedicated to selecting an official “Best in Texas” lineup.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says Texas wines continue improving year after year and are gaining respect across the country.
Winning wineries will receive statewide exposure, including a featured spread in Texas Monthly magazine and promotional campaigns through the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Expert Judges Will Crown The Best
This year’s judging panel includes respected wine journalist Jessica Dupuy, along with Master Sommeliers Jack Mason and Craig Collins.
Winning vintners will also receive custom Texas Vintners Cup belt buckles during a special ceremony at the State Fair of Texas on September 25, 2026.
Because let’s be honest, this is Texas, and belt buckles just make everything better.
West Texas Is Becoming Part Of Wine Country
Believe it or not, West Texas is quietly becoming part of the Texas wine scene, too. Wineries and vineyards are popping up across the Big Country and Concho Valley, giving Texans more places to enjoy local wines without driving all the way to the Hill Country.
A few wineries and vineyards around West Texas include:
- Abilene - The Winery At Willow Creek
- San Angelo - Christoval Vineyards
- Midland - Sprayberry Vineyards
- Coleman - Watson Vineyard
- Cisco - Broken X Winery
It’s pretty amazing seeing West Texas become part of a growing statewide wine industry that many Texans probably never realized existed.
Deadline Coming Soon
Texas wineries wanting to compete in the 2026 Texas Vintners Cup must submit their entries by Friday, June 5, 2026.
Whether you’re a wine expert or just someone like me who enjoys a good sangria or sweet red wine, there’s no denying that Texas wines are continuing to make a name for themselves across the Lone Star State. And if Texas wineries need somebody to sample a few of those sweet reds, I may just volunteer for the job.
