Abilene’s Veterans Cemetery Earns National Honor For Excellence
There are places in Texas that quietly remind us what sacrifice really means, and the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene is one of them. I’ve been there. And I’ll tell you firsthand, it’s one of those places that can bring a tear to your eye and pride to your heart all at the same time. Now, that sacred ground is getting national recognition.

Texas Veterans Cemetery Earns National Honor
According to an announcement from Dawn Buckingham, the Abilene cemetery has been awarded the prestigious Operational Excellence Award from the National Cemetery Administration.
That’s not just a plaque on the wall. This award is given only to cemeteries that exceed strict national standards during detailed inspections conducted every three years. In other words, this place isn’t just maintained, it’s honored, respected, and cared for at the highest level possible.
Craig Wooten, the on-site representative at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, shared just how rare this honor really is. Fewer than 10% of the 124 NCA grant-funded cemeteries nationwide receive this distinction, making it an incredibly difficult award to earn.
Wooten added that while all Texas state veterans cemeteries have achieved this honor, it remains a remarkable accomplishment. Recent recipients include cemeteries in Killeen, Mission, and Corpus Christi, now joining Abilene in this elite group.
Commissioner Buckingham also praised the cemetery staff for their dedication, noting they continue to provide a dignified resting place for Texas veterans and a peaceful space for families to honor and remember their loved ones.

The cemetery opened in 2009 and sits on 178 acres, with room for up to 50,000 veterans and their family members. It includes a ceremonial pavilion, a visitor center, an avenue of flags, and a memorial walkway that continues to grow.
Every detail matters there. Every flag. Every headstone. Every name.
And that’s what makes this recognition so meaningful, it reflects the care given to those who gave everything.
My Personal “What If” Moment
I’ll be honest with you. Serving in the United States military was something I always wanted to do. It was a dream of mine. But because I was born with one arm, I was never given that opportunity.
That’s something I’ve carried with me my whole life. So when I stand in a place like this cemetery, I don’t just see history, I feel it. I feel the honor, the sacrifice, and yes, even a little piece of the life I wish I could have lived.
A Place Every Texan Should Visit
If you ever get the chance, go. Walk those grounds. Read those names. Take it all in. Because here in the Big Country, we’re not just remembering our veterans, we are honoring them the right way.
And now, the rest of the nation is recognizing that, too.
