Top 3 Texas Parks Perfect For Summer Family Fun And Relaxation
Summer is just one week away, June 20, 2025, and that means time for me and my bride to spend some time away from the phones, television, and work. Some of the best places I've found to sit back and relax are our Texas State Parks. I love the fact that these parks are closer to home, yet away from the phone (even it's for a couple of days), these parks are awesome.

My Top 3 Favorite State Park Destinations:
- #3 - Possum Kingdom State Park: In Palo Pinto County, Possum Kingdom State Park is just two hours west of Fort Worth, this park spans over 20,000 acres. Possum Kingdom Lake is perfect for boating, swimming, fishing, and water sports. The park offers scenic trails, camping, RV sites, and cabins. Possum Kingdom can be a fun-filled family adventure or a peaceful natural retreat.
Note: First and Second are almost a tie, as they're closer to me and I call them "My Local State Parks." Need some time to de-stress or just to relax? Here you go:
- #2 Tie - San Angelo State Park: Situated 18 miles west of San Angelo on OC Fisher Reservoir and the Concho River's banks, this park boasts over 50 miles of hiking trails. It offers fishing, rafting, camping, swimming, and even facilities for horses.
- #1 Tie - Abilene State Park Campground: Located 16 miles southwest of Abilene in Tuscola, this state park features shady campsites along Elm Creek. Enjoy RV, tent, or screened camping, fishing, trail hiking, and swimming in their historic pool.

Remember, as summer begins be ready for anything, just prepare like a good Boy Scout or Girl Scout. Take plenty of water, food, sunscreen, the best hiking shoes, and most importantly the mosquito repellent or use what I like to use, 'Vicks Vapo Rub'. And remember be safe out there.
