What is "AI" really? Ever since I heard the term "AI" - aka Artificial Intelligence - I have been skeptical that a machine or computer we humans created can answer any and all questions we may ask and/or solve problems we may bring to its attention.

I recently had a conversation (typed into the computer) with an AI program about its definition and meanings. I asked the AI program ChatGPT: "what is artificial?" and "what is intelligence?"

Here's how my visit with AI went:

Me: What does AI stand for?
ChatGPT: AI stands for "Artificial Intelligence". It refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, learn, and perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as problem-solving, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.
Me: Does artificial mean "not real"?
ChatGPT: Yes, you are correct. The term "artificial" in "Artificial Intelligence" refers to the fact that the intelligence displayed by AI systems is not naturally occurring like human intelligence.
Me: Does intelligence mean "smart"?
ChatGPT: Yes, however, intelligence is a complex and multifaceted concept that goes beyond just being "smart." Intelligence generally refers to the ability to learn, reason, problem-solve, adapt to new situations, and effectively interact with the environment.
Me: So artificial intelligence is "not real, smart" correct?
ChatGPT: Yes, that's correct. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is "not real, smart" in the sense that it is not a naturally occurring form of intelligence like human intelligence. AI is a man-made or artificial construct created by humans to simulate certain aspects of human cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills. Source: ChatGPT.com

Not...real...smart. You can see why I might be more skeptical than before.

Nonetheless, I discovered that Texas ranks at the very top for AI job openings and opportunities. YES! Texas ranks at #2 nationwide. Too cool.
