7 Things Texans Will Argue About All Day Long
After living in Texas most of my life, I've learned that Texans love a lot of things. We love our families, our faith, our food, and our football. But if there's one thing Texans may love even more, it's our opinions.
The funny thing is that many of us share the same opinions, whether we realize it or not. Some of these beliefs might spark a friendly argument around the dinner table, but chances are you've heard every one of them before.
And believe it or not, my Buc-ee's bag, Buc-ee's t-shirt, and bumper sticker on the back of my truck have started all kinds of conversations with strangers at a convenience store, at the gas pump, and at the checkout line of my neighborhood supermarket.
Texas Measures Distance In Hours, Not Miles
- Ask a Texan how far it is from Abilene to Dallas, and you'll rarely hear the mileage.
- You'll hear, "About three hours."
- When you live in a state as big as Texas, time matters a lot more than miles.
Buc-ee's Is More Than A Gas Station
- Let's be honest. Buc-ee's isn't really a gas station anymore.
- It's a Texas road trip destination.
- You stop for fuel and somehow leave with Beaver Nuggets, beef jerky, a brisket sandwich, and a T-shirt you didn't know you needed.
Texas Breakfast Should Be Served All Day
- Some folks call them breakfast tacos. Around West Texas, I've always been partial to breakfast burritos.
- Either way, Texans know breakfast foods shouldn't have a time limit. If I want eggs, bacon, and a tortilla at midnight, that should be my Texas-given right.

Friday Night Football Is A Way Of Life In Texas
- Football isn't just a sport in Texas.
- It's a community event.
- Entire towns show up to cheer on their local team, marching bands perform like rock stars, and homecoming weekends become major celebrations.
Great Texas Barbecue Is Worth The Drive
- Texans will gladly drive two or three hours for outstanding barbecue.
- No complaints. No questions.
- If the brisket is good enough, we'll hit the road.
Texas Pride Runs Deep
- I've traveled all over the country, and I've never seen state pride quite like what we have here in Texas.
- Texans don't just live in Texas.
- We're proud of Texas.
Don't Mess With Texas
- Most people know the phrase.
- What many don't realize is that it started as an anti-litter campaign.
- Today, it means something even bigger. It represents the pride Texans have in our state, our communities, and the people who call Texas home.
What would you add to this list? I'd love to hear what you think Texans believe deep in their soul.
