Video: A Horrific Boating Crash That Kills 3 and Injures Two
Back in April, a fishing tournament on Alabama’s Smith Lake turned deadly when a professional angler’s bass boat collided at high speed with a center-console fishing vessel. Three men lost their lives, and two more were critically injured. Authorities say the young angler behind the wheel, traveling nearly 70 miles per hour, never slowed, turned, or appeared to see the anchored boat before impact. Investigators ruled out alcohol but cited operator inattention and distraction as the primary causes. As of this October, the driver now faces felony manslaughter charges.

Why Texans Should Pay Attention
This tragedy didn’t happen on a Texas lake, but it could have. Our waters draw thousands of boaters each year, from tournament bass anglers to families out tubing and relaxing. Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens and lake patrols work hard to keep everyone safe, but they can’t prevent crashes caused by inattention.
As a dad, I can’t ignore stories like this. My daughters sometimes call to say they’re headed to the lake for a weekend of boating. I’ll be honest, I worry. It’s the same fear many Texas parents feel, knowing that one distracted operator can change lives forever. Just like texting behind the wheel of a car, distracted boating can kill.
Lessons We Can All Take to Heart
- Keep your eyes forward. It sounds simple, but operator inattention is one of the leading causes of boat accidents.
- Control your speed. Open water may feel wide and empty, but anchored boats, swimmers, or sudden debris can appear without warning.
- Assign a spotter. If you’re navigating busy lakes like Possum Kingdom, Lake Travis, or O.H. Ivie, have someone watching for other boats.
- Respect no-wake zones and posted limits. They’re there for everyone’s protection.
A Video Warning Before You Watch
Officials released footage of the Alabama crash at the families’ request. I’ve seen it, and it’s heartbreaking, so much so that I broke out in tears watching it. If you choose to watch, know it’s graphic and shows the moment lives were lost. The goal is not shock, but to wake us up to the consequences of careless boating.
WARNING: Viewer Discretion Advised
Let’s Keep Texas Lakes Safe
Our lakes are places to fish, ski, and relax with family. But safety isn’t just the job of law enforcement; it’s on every boat operator. If this crash teaches us anything, it’s that one moment of distraction can cost lives. Let’s stay alert, slow down, and bring everyone home safe.
