West Texas Animal Shelters Led The Way In Animal Adoption Success
In 2024, Texas shelters and rescues reported more than 567,625 dogs and cats adopted. That’s over half a million four-legged friends finding homes, a number that shows just how big Texans’ hearts are when it comes to animal rescue.

As a proud member of Rescue the Animals Abilene, I’ve seen firsthand how much work goes into making these numbers possible. Our local shelters in the Big Country aren’t just finding homes here in West Texas, they’re also sending pets to other cities and states where families are waiting to adopt.
The Cost of Saving Lives
Of course, moving animals takes money. Cars, vans, buses, and even airplanes are needed to safely transport dogs and cats, especially to northern states where adoption demand is high. With fuel costs climbing, Rescue the Animals is currently hosting a fundraiser with an incredible opportunity: every donation will be matched 100% up to $400,000 thanks to a generous grant from Lee Orthodontics.
That means a $20 gift instantly becomes $40, and a $200 donation turns into $400, all going toward getting more West Texas animals to their forever homes. If you’d like to help more West Texas pets find their forever homes, you can make a donation at RescueTheAnimals.org/donate. Every dollar given right now is matched 100% up to $400,000.
What We Name Our Pets in Texas
Once these pets settle in, naming them is half the fun. According to new research from Compare the Market.com, here are the Top 5 names Texans are choosing for their new furry family members:
- Dogs - Male: Bear, Teddy, Charlie, Max, Milo
- Dogs - Female: Daisy, Lucy, Stella, Luna, Lola
- Cats - Male: Oliver, Loki, Leo, Milo, Max
- Cats - Female: Kitty, Luna, Lily, Nala, Bella
Names like Bear and Kitty may sound simple, but they reflect the warmth and personality Texans see in their adopted companions.
My Own Rescue Story
I can’t write about rescuing animals without sharing a little of my own story. Last February, right before Valentine’s Day, I brought home a golden retriever puppy from the Abilene shelter as a surprise for my wife. We named her Jane, because in the back of my mind, I thought maybe one day I’d find her a buddy named Tarzan.
Well, let me tell you, Jane stole all of our hearts and filled our home with more energy than we could’ve imagined. And as it turns out, there’s no room for Tarzan, because after Jane came along, we also adopted Gunner, a large gray cat, Sebastian, a black cat with piercing yellow eyes, and Ginger, a tailless Siamese Manx.
So now our house is full, our hearts are fuller, and our living room belongs to the rescue crew. That’s what adoption is all about, it doesn’t just change the life of an animal, it changes yours too.
