On Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes hit the Big Country. The main body of the storms landed just northwest of Abilene, hitting the town of Hawley, Texas, and destroying nearly two dozen homes, demolishing half of them. Many families were left completely homeless, as the photos below will show.

One family ran from their home in the middle of the tornado to a storm chaser vehicle parked nearby and asked to be transported to the nearest hospital in Abilene. The town of Hawley is trying to rebuild, and many of its neighbors are coming together from all around the Big Country to assist our neighbors and friends, showing the strength in our communities.

Rhythms of Resilience is a concert event designed to raise funds and assist families in and around Hawley affected by these brutal storms. This event will feature Red Dirt artists Mark Powell, Chris Lackey, Hawley's own Caleb Sutton, and Sam Moore from Alabama, whose sister is a Hawley resident.
