Standing proudly in San Angelo, Texas, Fort Concho was built in 1867 to protect settlers, mail routes, and trade along the Texas frontier. For years, it was home to Buffalo Soldiers, frontier lawmen, and officers who shaped West Texas history.

But ask almost anyone in San Angelo, and they’ll tell you, some of those soldiers never left.

Reports of Paranormal Activity

Staff, visitors, and even city officials have reported strange happenings inside the preserved limestone buildings:

  • Footsteps echoing in empty hallways late at night
  • Doors opening and closing without explanation
  • Faint voices and laughter drifting through the officer’s quarters when no one is inside
  • Cold spots and flickering lights, especially in Barracks 1 and the Headquarters Building

Some witnesses claim to have seen full-bodied apparitions of uniformed soldiers, still guarding the fort as if it were 1870.

The Ghost of Colonel Mackenzie

One of the most persistent legends is that of Colonel Ranald Mackenzie, a strict commander who was known for his discipline. Visitors have reported seeing a stern man in uniform pacing near the parade grounds, only to watch him vanish into thin air.

Others say his spirit is often accompanied by the sound of marching boots, as if he’s still inspecting his troops.
