Abilene Police Steps Up Speed Patrols on 2 Major Roads
Back in 2023, you may recall the STEP program in which the Abilene Police Department (APD) was participating. STEP stands for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The STEP program is aimed at reducing speeding to improve road safety on selected high-traffic Abilene roads.

Targeting South First and Winters Freeway
Several days ago, I received an email from the APD's Public Information Officer, Rick Tomlin, about their latest "Increased Traffic Enforcement" program aimed at reducing speeding on two of Abilene's primary thoroughfares. There will be additional traffic enforcement police officers placed on the South First corridor and the Winters Freeway.
Month-to-Month Patrols Keep Drivers Guessing
While I have noticed on my way to and from work, because I travel both of the aforementioned roadways, an increase in officers, especially during peak drive times in both morning and afternoon drives, when most Abilenians are driving to and from work. The APD patrols will run on a month-to-month basis, ensuring drivers never know exactly when they’re being watched, which, according to APD, is the point.
The Goal: Safer Roads, Fewer Crashes
Officer Tomlin says the goal is simple: "Let's change bad driving habits and make the roads safer for everyone. This is all about reducing crashes and saving lives, not just writing tickets."
APD and TxDOT Urge Defensive Driving
The Abilene Police Department and the Texas Department of Transportation are urging all Texans to practice defensive driving and slow down, especially in these targeted high-traffic areas. Bottom line is this: If you speed through Abilene, there’s a good chance APD, backed by TxDOT, will be waiting for you. Rick says, "Drive smart, buckle up, and keep your phone down."
Remember: Move Over for Flashing Lights
Which reminds me, I have seen several Abilenians pulled over by the APD. So, when you see the flashing red and blue lights by the side of the road, remember to move over and slow down; it's the law.
