Two Abilene Broadcasters Step Into a Texas-Red Dirt Music Video

Yep, it's true two local Abilene broadcasters appear in a Texas Red Dirt music video. The Market President for Townsquare Media Abilene, Christopher Sanchez or as I refer to him from time to time "El Hefe" for TSM-Abilene, and the drummer in the Mark Powell band. First off the history of the song is that it was co-written by Mark Powell, Rico Gonzales (who is the lead singer for the group Kin Faux), and the Outlaws and Legends emcee, songwriter, actor, and a comedian known as Clinton Pickens, who actually came up with the idea for the song.

The Offer: Becoming the Father-in-Law

I was sitting in the studio at the radio station when Mark Powell, founder of the Outlaws and Legends music festival stopped in to share who was coming to perform at the next music festival, then Mark asked, "Would you be willing to appear in my next music video, and the reason I'm asking is because I want you to play the roll of my father-in-law." Of course, I said yes with no hesitation, and then I abruptly asked, "Why me as your father-in-law?"

Playing with Language: ‘En La Familia’ vs. ‘In-Law’

I'm thinking right away "Do I look that old, am I looking like father-in-law material, what is the song about?" Powell shared with me the "play on words" about "In La Familia" in Spanish means "in the family", and not like the in-laws as we refer to when one gets married and all of a sudden inherits the spouse's family, like mother-in-law, father-in-law, and brother-in-law. The latter, Mark's brother-in-law in the video is played by singer/songwriter Rico Gonzales from the Texas Red Dirt Country band KinFaux.

On-Set Fun and a Big Happy Family

As the song goes, we become one BIG happy family as we the Hispanic Mexican Americans keeping the family together, move into Mark Powell's' huge ranch house and property (after the wedding of course), and like a "good father-in-law," I begin keeping Powell on task whether he's cooking in the kitchen, mowing the grass (that scene is when I reveal my missing arm by telling Mark he is #1... per se) or whatever the task I just make sure we are all one big happy Familia.

I hope you enjoy the video, and yes I would be open for all my kids and their in-law families to move in with my wife and me. This way, I can get some help mowing grass, painting, doing house repairs, and most importantly, cooking so we can have those awesome family meals, cutting up, laughing, and making lifelong memories. I'll state the obvious "En la familia there's a lot of amor."
