Back in August, the Psy song 'Gangnam Style' took the world and the internet by storm, right at a time we were finally getting sick of that 'Call Me Maybe' tune.
We've been mourning the sad loss of 'Calvin and Hobbes' ever since cartoonist Bill Watterson stopped producing the beloved comic strip in 1995. But apparently the strip hasn't gone completely forgotten, since a piece of original 'Calvin and Hobbes' artwork recently broke a record at auction by selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A farmer in India recently became the world's oldest dad at 96-years-old. But what's even more impressive is that he broke a record set by himself two years prior. How the heck does this guy keep going?
The Guinness World Records has named Amber Jacobs (aka DJ AJ) the youngest DJ on the airwaves. At the tender age of six, the precocious Amber is making headlines for sharing the music that she loves on air for listeners to enjoy and is already an internet sensation.
In case you completely avoided all contact with the internet yesterday, Felix Baumgartner's jump from 128,100 feet about Earth was a success.
Okay. We get it, Red Bull -- you're EXTREME. They've certainly proved that point with their historic mission, which should be taking place today if weather holds. A trained pilot will be going a record 120,000 feet above the surface of the earth in a balloon, and then he's going to jump out and fall towards the earth at supersonic speeds.
Setting any kind of record must be pretty awesome. Having the lowest voice on the planet or making the largest Frito pie in all of crunchy snack history garners major bragging rights. It seems like everyone these days wants to take a crack at making things bigger, better, or taller, but in the case of Nerina Orton, she’s aiming for small. Really, really small.
Ron Wallace was able to grow a pumpkin to 2,009 pounds. And now the Greene, RI man is $15,500 richer for it.
How low can you go? Tim Storms might be tired of that question, but he’d probably be willing to bet you a large sum of money (if he’s a betting man) that he can sing a heck of a lot lower than you, or anyone you know, can. Tim’s deep register is so low, in fact, that Guinness World Records named his voice as the lowest human voice on the planet.
"The song is characterized by its strongly addictive beats and lyrics, and is thus certain to penetrate the foundations of modern philosophy." That's the description of this video on YouTube. And they might be right -- Psy's 'Gangnam Style'
Thanks to the website RecordSetter, which allows folks to invent a world record in anything, many a wacky record was set and/or broken in 2011.
Some of our favorite RecordSetter marks this year include the record for two girls slapping each other with pizza, the record for most time spent simultaneously juggling, eating and balancing on “rola bola” and the man who set a world record for most quarters shoved up his nose.
