This is Ginger, the most lovable 5 month old Boxer Lab mix that is looking for love. She was found roaming the streets of Abilene around the 3200 block of North First Street when she was picked up by the Abilene Animal Shelter. Because Ginger is a stray, she will need to find a home right away before her time runs out this weekend. I spent some time with Ginger and discovered she loves to sit in your lap and just chill out, which is a good thing that she only weighs 25 pounds. She is very well behaved for a 5 month old.

This is Wolfe, a German Shepherd Black Lab mix that was turned in by his owner because the landlord said "either the dog goes or you both go." So the owner brought Wolfe to that Abilene Animal Shelter in hopes of finding Wolfe a home before his time runs out. Wolfe sits, stays, and follows basic commands. He is a very well behaved 9 year old, and the fact that he is fixed, chipped and has his shots makes him a very attractive pet price wise.

This is Bella, a  yellow-lab mix that should have been named 'Lucky, because she's had a rough go at life. She is an owner turn in, only because her previous owner didn't know how to train her to keep from jumping up on them whenever they were outside with her. That is the only reason Bella was surrendered to the Abilene Animal Shelter, where her time has run out. This is her last chance as you'll see by the fact that she is also discounted to only $20. While other dogs go for $70 and more. Please go check Bella out because these are her last few days of life, unless you save her.

I was watching our local news yesterday and saw this story about our enlisted military personnel and their pets. What happens to Fido when our nations defenders are deployed to the other side of the earth? While in the past many of our nations service men and women would either send their pets to their parents or other family members, if that is an option. In most cases the enlisted personnel would surrender their pets to local animal shelters. Until now, Dogs On Deployment is a national non-profit that provides service members with an online database of individuals and/or families who are willing to welcome a Dog On Deployment into their home for the length of their owner's deployment.

It's a really sad and dark day at the Fernandez house, "Ozzie the Rock Star Dog" has passed on. Anybody that knows me, knows that I absolutely love animals, and I know a lot of you consider your pets family members too. I found it therapeutic writing my best friends obituary, for Ozzie was not only family, he was part of me. Oz helped me get through the bad days and was my buddy when I was having a great day. Ozzie always had a tail wag and a lick on the cheek when I least expected it.

Thomas the Treeing Walker Coonhound is a breed of hound descended from a cross between the English and American Foxhounds. The first time the breed was recognized as a separate breed in the United States was in early 1945. Amazingly the Abilene Animal Shelter has one of these rare breed dogs, and he needs a ride to the Dallas Ft. Worth area Coonhound Rescue group.

It's an awesome day for Hercules the German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. He went home with Abilene's best and most well known weatherman, Pete Beretta. I received a phone call Monday evening from a very excited Pete Beretta, who began the conversation by saying "Hercules came home with me, Jack! This big guy is so beautiful, you ought to see him after I gave him a bath." Beretta went on to say "you weren't kidding when you said this is the sweetest dog,Hercules is awesome brother!"

While Chiquita the Chihuahua did not get adopted, she is in the best place possible to give this aging canine a chance at growing old gracefully. Queen the sweet little Border Collie was adopted by what Aaron Vannoy Executive Director for the Abilene Animal Control Shelter says is a "Border Collie rescue group." "The dog 'Queenie' that you came and did as the KEAN Critter has found a rescue group to take him. This is great news and another success. I will share photos of when they come get Queenie" Vannoy said.  A big thank you goes to everyone that helped with this awesome little critter. Curtis the little one year old Jack Russell, Wirehair terrier mix was adopted on his final extension day. Amy B. of Abilene gave Curtis a loving home, so a big special thanks goes to Miss Amy for caring enough to give a poor defenseless little critter a second chance at life. The smartest pets and nearly all movie and television pets were rescued from shelters just like ours. So no need in lining the pockets of breeders, when a smarter, better looking, more lovable pet is waiting for you at the Abilene Animal Shelter.

Guess who finally got to go home for the Holidays? Nina the Spaniel mix! She was finally adopted this past Saturday when the Abilene Animal Shelter and other rescue organizations held an 'emergency pet rescue' on the busiest shopping weekend of the year. I was overcome with joy when Animal Services Manager Aaron Vannoy informed me of Nina's good fortune.
