Yesterday, April 1, started Autism Awareness month.  Today marks the fourth World Autism Awareness Day set by the United Nations.

Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD).

This month is designated to help people understand the challenges parents and kids face with autism.  Autism affect 1 in 110 children and more so in boys than girls.  It affects more children than cancer or juvenile diabetes or even AIDS.  While we have made great strides with this illness it is still not known what causes autism and therefore we still need more funding for research.   Our own Ms. Texas Ashley Melnick is raising awareness while representing our state; her brother suffers from autism.

There are 3 upcoming walks to raise awareness.  Today Saturday, April 2 is Abilene's walk, it will be held at Nelson Park home of the Abilene Zoo beginning at 9 am.  Here is the registration link with information if you would like to participate.
