This weekend is the time change.  We spring forward losing an hour of sleep in the process. We lose an hour of sleep but gain an hour of daylight.  Why do we have these time changes anyway?  It's been used in the US since WWI in order to conserve energy.  However, it wasn't formally enacted into law until 1918.  That law was then repealed due to public outcry.  During WWII President Roosevelt enacted year round Daylight Savings Time, there was no formal "law" so it was based on local decisions which really reeked havoc so it was changed again.  And again, and again.  Jump to 2005:

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. beginning in 2007, though Congress retained the right to revert to the 1986 law should the change prove unpopular or if energy savings are not significant. Going from 2007 forward, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S.

So the bottom line is that we do all of this time changing to "save energy".  Now you know.
