As the temperatures continues to go up Texans flock to lakes, rivers, and the Gulf Coast, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Texas Game Wardens are reminding everyone that safety on the water isn’t just a recommendation, it’s a responsibility.

2024 Brings New Safety Reminders

With National Safe Boating Week running May 17-23, Texas Game Wardens are launching a renewed push to educate boaters before the summer season kicks into high gear. Assistant Commander Cody Jones said it best:

“These incidents aren't just statistics, they represent real people and real families forever changed. Wearing a life jacket is a small step that can have a life-saving impact.”

In 2024, Texas recorded 169 boating incidents, including 24 fatalities. Alarmingly, 22 of those who died weren’t wearing life jackets. Another 78 boating accidents caused injuries to more than 100 individuals.

Texas Lakes and Waterways Will Be Busy

Texas is home to:

1.7 million acres of freshwater lakes
4 million acres of coastal saltwater
191,000 miles of rivers and streams

Over 919,000 vessels, including 560,000 registered boats and 359,000 unregistered vessels like kayaks and paddleboards

That’s a lot of water, and a lot of people enjoying it. With summer holidays approaching, wardens want to reduce preventable accidents by encouraging smart, safe choices on the water.

Essential Boating Safety Tips from TPWD

Here are some quick reminders before heading out:

Always wear a life jacket (especially children under 13, it’s the law)
Use your ignition safety switch
Never boat under the influence of alcohol
Don’t overload your boat
Maintain a safe speed and be alert
Avoid submerged objects in low water
Take a certified boater safety course
Leave a float plan with someone you trust
Use extra caution on personal watercraft
Avoid saltwater if you have open wounds due to natural vibrio bacteria

Swimming Safety Tips Everyone Should Know

Game Wardens also stress the importance of swimming safety:

Learn how to swim, take lessons
Supervise children closely at all times
Stay hydrated, especially in Texas heat
Never swim alone, use the buddy system
Know your limits, don’t take unnecessary risks
Stick to designated swim areas
