If you know me, you know I love camping, fishing, and just about anything that gets families outdoors. So when I saw this announcement from the City of Abilene Parks and Recreation Department, it immediately caught my attention.

And here's the best part: you don't have to be camping to join in on the fishing fun.

Kids Fish Returns to Johnson Park

The City of Abilene is opening a portion of its annual Family Campout to the public for Kids Fish with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

The fishing event will take place on November 7th, from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. will be held at Johnson Park, 273 Johnson Road in Abilene. All ages are welcome to participate. Anyone age 17 or older must have a valid Texas fishing license.

I've talked about Abilene's Family Campout for years because events like this are exactly what I love about living in West Texas. Give me the outdoors, a fishing pole, a campsite, and some time with family and friends, and I'm a happy camper — literally.

You Don't Have to Camp to Fish

This year's Family Campout begins Friday, November 6, and continues through Saturday morning. This overnight event will include dinner, songs and stories under the stars, s'mores, breakfast, sunrise yoga, and Kids Fish.

However, you do not have to register for the Family Campout just to participate in Kids Fish. The fishing portion is being opened to the public, giving families another opportunity to get the kids outdoors and introduce them to fishing.

Sometimes the simplest family memories are the ones children remember forever: getting up early, grabbing a fishing pole and spending a couple of hours together beside the water.

So grab the kids, or the grandkids, and head to Johnson Park.
