New EPA Mandate in 2025 Brings Big Changes
With the U.S. EPA’s upcoming 2025 mandate to switch HVAC systems to R-454B refrigerant (also known as Opteon XL41), homeowners and businesses alike are encouraged to act now to avoid high costs and potential system issues come January 1. This new refrigerant, aimed at lowering global warming potential, is part of the latest EPA effort to reduce environmental impacts, but it’s already causing a few bumps for HVAC providers as they adapt.
Act Now to Avoid High Costs and Shortages
HVAC professionals across Texas, like Tony Phelps from Accurate Air Solutions, is advising customers to get their systems checked and updated before the new year. The current refrigerants, especially R-410A, are being phased out as of December 31st, 2024, making existing supplies increasingly scarce and driving up costs. “The remaining stock will be in high demand,” says Phelps, who told me "Advise everyone you know to get their systems serviced now to extend their lifespan and avoid future compatibility issues.
Transition Troubles with New Refrigerant
For many HVAC providers, training is underway to learn about R-454B, but early adopters have found it isn’t always performing as smoothly as R-410A, the standard since 2010. Technicians are working to fine-tune installations and ensure reliable performance, especially in grocery and convenience stores where malfunctioning freezers have led to spoiled foods and empty aisles as seen here in Abilene.

Avoid Winter Setbacks with Regular Maintenance
Homeowners beware, protect yourself by scheduling maintenance on your HVAC system now. Regular service can help maximize your system's life and keep it running efficiently through this transitional period. By addressing any potential issues before January 1st, 2024, you can avoid costly repairs or replacements that might be needed if refrigerant shortages or compatibility issues arise.
Take Action and Protect Your Investment
Texas residents should act soon. Preparing your HVAC system now may help you avoid high costs and inconvenient downtime in the new year. With most weather forecasters predicting a hotter, drier 2025, it’s wise to be prepared. For updates or specific recommendations, consult your local HVAC expert. As Tony Phelps says, “Make sure your system is ready, and let’s help extend the life of your system.”
Finally, in closing the new letter R454B is designed to be installed as a new unit only, it is not to be retrofitted to any of the old 410 units or anything older.
