Abilene Proudly Welcomes Back McKay’s Bakery Under a New Name
After more than three decades of serving the Big Country, McKay’s Bakery closed its downtown Abilene doors in July 2023, leaving locals with fond memories and empty dessert plates. But that’s about to change. The iconic bakery is making a comeback under a new name and new ownership: Moli McKay’s Bakery, opening soon at 2534 South 7th Street. And just in time for the Holidays.

From Memories to Muffins
New owner Denise Wright, originally from Mineral Wells, says she moved to Abilene to be closer to her family and grandchildren. Now, she’s reviving one of the city’s sweetest traditions. Wright says she chose the name Moli McKay’s as a nod to her own middle name, Molinaro, and as a tribute to the McKays’ legacy that has meant so much to generations of Abilenians.
Three Classic Pastries Return
When asked which of the famous McKay’s recipes would make the first comeback, Wright didn’t even hesitate; she shouted, “100% the Thumbprint Cookies!”
Fans can once again savor three of McKay’s most beloved pastries: pink thumbprint cookies, harvest muffins, and chocolate eclairs. She says more favorites will follow once the bakery settles into its new routine.
A Sweet Reunion for the Big Country
As someone who’s given away McKay’s birthday cakes on the air for nearly 40 years, I can’t wait to see those glass cases filled again. McKay’s might have closed, but its heart, and its recipes, never left Abilene.
Welcome back, Moli McKay’s Bakery. The Big Country has missed you.
Just some final thoughts, I can hardly wait to grab a hot cup of coffee and a couple of the pink thumbprint cookies. As for my wife, when I broke the news to her, she said, "I'd better keep the fridge stocked with milk, because I can't wait to sink my teeth into those incredible chocolate eclairs!"
All I can say to all of the big country is Bon appetit! Check out the photo gallery below to bring back some fond memories.
