Jerrod Niemann stepped up to help with this year's Country Cares for St. Jude event, and the singer shared the amazing story of one St. Jude patient who turned up in his life again a decade after they first met.

Niemann tells Taste of Country and other media outlets that he's visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital more than a dozen times over the last decade, but the story of a cancer survivor named John is one that always brings a smile to his face. John lives in Kansas City, and he "came out to a show that we were doing for St. Jude, and he had actually been here a decade ago when I first came, and we met," Niemann recalls.

"And to see him be cancer free after all these years, and St. Jude's still paying attention, saying, 'Hey, we need you to come in every six months,' or whether it's a year or five years, depending on the length of time they've been cancer-free. I just love how no one's ever just cut out," he says. "They're still part of the family. And to see a child now as an adult, it was very surreal. Every little thing we do matters, and it's so exciting to see people survive — especially kids, these angels that are stronger than most people we've ever met."

St. Jude Kids Share the ABCs of Cancer

St. Jude works tirelessly to raise money to fight childhood cancer, as well as conducting cutting-edge research. The hospital's mission is to "advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment." In keeping with the hospital's guiding principles, no family ever has to pay for treatment at St. Jude. The hospital freely shares its research with other hospitals around the world.

Country Cares for St. Jude has been raising money for the cause for decades, and on Feb. 1-2 Taste of Country is joining over a dozen Townsquare Media radio stations to help raise money for the important work by sharing stories from country stars and the kids of St. Jude.
