It’s the holiday season, and if the air suddenly feels a little colder and your relationship feels a bit icy, you may want to brace yourself.

A new analysis of relationship trends has revealed that December 11th is the most common breakup day of the entire year. It happens so frequently that it’s earned a gloomy nickname: Breakup Day. And while this trend happens nationwide, many Texans say they’ve felt the holiday strain too.

Breakup Day and How Researchers Identified It

Breakup Day became widely recognized after researchers analyzed years of Facebook relationship status changes to determine when couples were most likely to switch from “in a relationship” to “single.” Even though public status changes aren’t as popular now, the trend has continued off-platform.

More recent data from the Flirtini dating app supports it: a large number of online daters reported experiencing holiday-season breakups, with three-quarters saying they’ve been through a December split.

Why December Breakups Are So Common

Psychologists say the timing makes sense. The end of the year naturally pushes people into reflection mode. As we look ahead to January, many evaluate their lives, their goals, and yes- their relationships.

The holiday season also comes with stress, family expectations, travel plans, and financial pressure. If a relationship is already struggling, all of that can be a tipping point.

Other Breakup Peaks Throughout the Year

December isn’t the only time relationships hit a rough patch. Researchers found two other notable breakup spikes:

• Late March, when couples often reassess things heading into spring.
• The Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, dubbed Red Tuesday, which sees a surge of last-minute breakups before the romantic holiday.

These patterns show that Breakup Day is part of a larger annual cycle- though December 11th remains the biggest by far.

If you’re in a healthy relationship, this doesn’t mean disaster is coming. But experts say this time of year is a good moment to check in with your partner, communicate openly, and manage expectations around the holidays.

Breakups are hard, but people online have already pointed out one small upside:
