If you're looking for ways to help our community, one way is by giving blood. On Tuesday, July 18th, and Wednesday, July 19th, you can do just that with the annual Guns & Hoses Blood Drive. This isn't your ordinary blood drive as Abilene Police Department (guns) and Abilene Fire Department (hoses) square off in this friendly competition.

What is the 'Guns and Hoses' Blood Drive?

Basically, you go give blood, then designate it for either the Abilene Police Department or the Abilene Fire Department, for bragging rights. Your blood will go to help 17 area hospitals. The drive was started in honor of fallen officer Rodney Holder, and encourages first responders as well as the community-at-large to donate blood.

When and Where is the Blood Drive?

The blood drive will be Tuesday, July 18th, and Wednesday, July 19th. This year's event will be held at Hendrick Medical Blood Center at 1701 Pine Street between 8 am and 7 pm on both days.

I think it's super cool that APD and AFD get together each year for this blood drive. These heroes do a lot for our community, so it only makes sense that we help them help our community by donating blood. It only takes a few minutes to give the gift of life.

Just make sure you designate your donation for either 'Guns' or 'Hoses' which will ultimately benefit the entire community.

Speaking of our community, did you know there are 12 missing persons cold cases in Abilene?
